This is mine and David's project. we also did the essay:
The story “The Wise Old Woman” is about an emperor who has sent all old people from the village to die in the mountains. However, a young farmer disobeyed the emperor and hid his old mother in the basement. Then, Lord Higa threatened the village to be destroyed and he gave them complete three challenging tasks if they wanted to be free. The old woman solved all three tasks and Lord Higa began to gain respect for old people. This folktale has many themes however we think that the theme is “wisdom comes from experiences.”
Wisdom can help you solve many problems. In the story, the village was to be destroyed by Lord Higa. He would let them alone only if they would complete three problems. The quote “I have kept my aged mother hidden beneath the floor of my house, and it is she who solved each of your problems,” (pg.212) shows that the old mother was able to come up with an answer to each problem through her wisdom. Because she solved all the problems, it shows that experience can help you solve many challenges in life.
Experiences and wisdom can also help us a lot in our lives and sometimes, it might also save our life. “The Wise Old Woman” told us about how the old mother solved the problems from the Lord Higa and she saved the whole village from being conquered. ““Even in such a small village there is much wisdom,” he declared, “and its people should be allowed to live in peace.”” (pg. 212).
This quote shows that thanks to the old mother, the village had not been harmed and asked to do the hard requests anymore. Wisdom can not only protect you from being harmed but also from being killed.
The story “The Wise Old Woman” is about an old woman that is very wise and she saves the whole village. She had a lot of experiences already from her past, so she knows how to do all Lord Higa’s requests. This story teaches us a very important lesson which is “Wisdom comes from experiences.” Because this is a folktale, we recommend it to small children at the age of 6 and 6th graders and all people who love traditional Japanese folktales.

9. Literary Skills Review: Point of View
I think if Don Anselmo were the narrator, he would tell us more about how he felt about the tree, or why he wanted to sell the land. He could also share his feelings about the customers and why he didn't increase the price. But in the other side, we won't be able to know how other people felt about Don Anselmo and what he wore.

7. Make Judgments
I think it is good when Terry asked his father about Vietnam. Because if he didn't ask, he would never feel comfortable and he would always wondering. After he asked his father, he understood more about his father and his father's life. Terry's dad talked about what happened in Vietnam made himself any better i think. Secondly, Terry could understand more about his family and where his family came from. What is the past of his parents.

“Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time in 2010, Hollywood presents you “Renew Christmas” and pleased let me introduce to you Charlie Wason in the roll of Rockley. Well will premier this movie on December 27th.” - The MC said as Charlie appeared on the bright, colorful stage. He was wearing his black suit, black tie and black shoes. He also wore a diamond ring on his right hand and a diamond earring on his left ear. Charlie was a very famous actor and he was very popular. He liked to tell jokes, helping people… ON SCREEN so that’s why many people liked to watch his movies because they didn’t know the real him. In real life, he scared of little dust because it could make him dirty so he always sat in his Limousine. He also disliked babies and children because he thought they are annoying. He went to bars and clubs almost every single day and he used his money on clothes, diamonds, while all the magazines said he used it for charity. Many actresses and actors got annoyed and hated him for his arrogant and selfishness. He always thought himself as the best and insulted other people.
“Hey dude! What the heck make you so stupid, eh? Can’t you understand what does YELLOW mean? I want this flower on this shirt to be YELLOW, NOT red! Go and tell that guy to change it! MAKEUP!” – He shouted at his assistant and gave him an angry glared. His entire makeup people ran towards him and started to give him a makeover for the next shoot. Charlie is shooting his new movie, “Shout it out Loud” and he was the main actor in it. He was very proud of himself to be the main character in the movie and he laughed and offended other co-actors and actress.
People around him started to get annoyed by him and hate him more days to days and they started to pass by him. Whenever he tried to talk to them, they just walked away like they didn’t hear anything. After years came by, the magazines and some of the star television shows started to get bored of interviewing him so they stopped. The audience started to forget about him and they didn’t watch his movies anymore. No produces wanted to invite him to act in their movies anymore and he became a No-One-Knew person. He became poorer and poorer for spending his money without getting any in. He couldn’t understand why people hated him so much, while he was the most popular person on earth. But then, he heard some people looked at him and said, “Hey! Does this face look similar to you? He is the old actor that had never let anyone borrow anything and always said he did charity, while he didn’t. Remember?” After heard that, he started to wonder how come people think he was like that and he thought back about his actions in the past. He understood and regretted! When he went home, he looked at the mirror, and he had been shocked by seeing himself with white hair and big white beard that he didn’t even notice for so many years.
“OMG!!!! What the heck is happening to me? Ahhhhhhhh! Why do I have such big beard and white long hair like this? Is anyone there? Is anyone there? Ahhhhhhh!” – He screamed and jumped up from the bed. He found himself on being surrounding by his maids with their surprising eyes and they were wondering what had happened to him. Usually what we would do was yelling at them and said “What are you standing for? Go do your works man!” but this time, he smiled at them and said “I just had a weirdest dream ever, but I LOVE it! Are you guys’ hungry? Cuz I am! Let go out and have dinner shall we?” Everybody was surprise by his invitation but they were all happy and they answered him “Sure! Why not?”, and they went out to eat dinner. From that day, he was very nice to everyone. He did charity, helped many people and everybody loved him.

Dear Haley,
How are you girl? It has been a VERY long time since we last write to each other, don’t you think? I had missed you a lot, you have no idea! How’s your studying so far? I heard you are having a very hard time doing all the school works, hah? So that is why, I want to invite you, to persuade you to go camping with me this weekend so you can relax your mind and have some fun!
I know, I know you don’t like camping and get dirty or having an incident, and the only thing you always do is study and study. But guess what? OPEN YOUR MIND! Think about it! If you go camping with me, you will enjoy, have fun and you don’t have to be stress and always think about studying. You will meet some more friends than just knowing me. You will know more about the nature, about the people around us. Don’t you want to know how they live like? Don’t you want to know how to feel like to sleep in the forest? You love science, don’t you? So this is a wonderful opportunity for you to relax your mind, for you to explore the world. When you go camping, you can interact more with people so you understand them more, you know? And I’m sure this time, the weather will be a good factor for us to go camping so you should go with me. I’m sure you will enjoy, a lot!
Anyway, I hope you will go camping with me. I know we will have a lot of fun there and you will study many more new interesting things. Response me as soon as possible ok? So I can tell the tourist to book for you a spot too. Hope you can go with me. Love you and miss you a lot my dear friend! Take care!

Linda

Have you ever lived in two countries? Or have you even thought about moving to another country to live? Maybe you haven’t, but I have. I used to live in two countries, and it was really hard for me to get used to two absolutely different cultures. I was born in Slovakia and by the year i turned 6, i came to Vietnam. At first, I didn't know any or maybe just a very little Vietnamese so it was very hard for me to communicate to others. I always had to ask my mom or dad to translate for me. When I first came to Vietnam, the first thing my parents did was finding schools for my sister and me to study. My sister went to a primary school, and I went to a kindergarten school. I studied in a school named “Trường Mầm Non Bé Ngoan” (Good Kid Kindergarten).
I was very hyper when I heard my parents saying that I would go to the kindergarten but was trembling from fear and thinking a lot about the first day. I had a lot of fun with my friends back in Slovakia so I had always thought I would have the same enjoyable time as I used to. But I was WRONG!!! On the first day, I tried to talk to them, say “hi” and tried to play with them, but they just ignoring me. My Vietnamese was not good, so sometimes I still mixed up with words from Slovak language. Sometimes they couldn’t understand what I said, so they thought I’m a weirdo. They hit me, didn’t play with me, and sometimes didn’t even talk to me, they always told me to do this-do that for them. I didn’t know anything, so I had to listen to them and be their “prisoner”. When it was our play time, everybody was playing together-everybody except me. I always had to sit in a corner of the room and played alone, whenever I wanted to join them, they gave a glare and went away. They didn’t even think should how I felt-it hurt. I couldn’t feel my heart beating, my hands wanted to fall off-I was desperate.
Every weekday was nightmare to me. When I got home, my eyes felt hot and something wet came out of them, but I didn’t realize what they were because I felt so miserable. I was too busy think to myself how foolish I was to follow them and “beg” them to play with me all the time. I could no more see happy lights, I didn’t want to eat or talk, all I wanted was to get out of that school and go back to Slovakia.
Everyday, when my mom came to school and picked me up, she asked the same question: “How’s your day darling?”
And the only thing I could answer was: “My day was great mom!” and forced myself a fake smile. I didn’t want to tell her the truth, because I know she would feel bad and might find another school for me. It was really hard for my parents to find a school for me since we just arrived to Vietnam few months before.
But everyday with those tears on my face, I just couldn’t take it anymore and I told my mom what happened to me. My mom felt sorry and she asked me if I want to change school and obviously I DO want to but I told her: “No mom, I don’t. There will be only few more months mom, I will be ok.”
I stopped crying so I won’t make her feel sorry anymore. She told me that it would take time to make new friends and told me not to feel sad anymore. I nodded and watched television. After that day, I didn’t care about anything anymore. Now, when I think back about that situation, I always tell myself: “Life is unfair! It can never be perfect! So don’t expect it to be like what we expected!”

In the story Flowers for Algernon, Charlie was a person that was very dumb and suddenly, after an operation, he became smart. Just like Adam and Eve, they were so innocent and suddenly, after ate the apple, they had been punished and lived in a sad life.
Charlie was so dumb and stupid. He knew nothing and understood nothing. People in the factory that he worked for always made fun of him and laugh at him. But to him it was normal, because he think they liked him and he didn't understand that he was being making fun of. But since after the operation, he changed. He became smarter, he knew things that he didn't know, he understood things that he didn't understand before. People in the factory started to hate him because of his intelligent. Thanks to Charlie's intelligent, the factory saved $10,000 per year and it made the others in the factory hate him even more.
Adam and Eve were two innocent people that God made and all they did was follow the God's rule and enjoy there wonderful life. But one day, there was a snake appeared from no where and told Eve to eat the apple that God said they cannot eat it. Eve told Adam to take the apple down the tree. Right after Adam took it down, God appeared and punished them, sent them to a place with many difficulties that they have to pass.
The story Flower for Algernon and the story about Adam and Eve have the same idea, the same theme. They all talk about the changes and the challenging in those changes.
